FRANKFURT AM MAIN/MUCH, March 9, 2013 — More than 600 trees were planted in just three hours in Much-Gerlinghausen in the Rhein-Sieg district by a group of youth volunteers. The planting initiative is part of the “100,000 Trees for the Rhein-Sieg District” project, organized by the Plant for the Planet student initiative. FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, has been supporting the Tutzing-based initiative financially and in the preparation of various events since 2011. The tree-planting event in Much was the third FedEx-sponsored event in the Rhein-Sieg district.

Under the guidance of the regional forestry office Rhein-Sieg-Erft, the group of 10- to 12-year-old students planted 500 beech trees and 100 cherry trees. Before the planting event, Kai, an ambassador for climate justice at Plant for Planet, informed the participants about the importance of trees for the climate in a talk on site. “The Plant for the Planet events show us how we can help combat climate change. We want to help shape the future by planting trees and minimizing the effect of CO2,” said Kai, aged 15.

“We are very impressed with how children and young people around the world are getting involved with Plant for the Planet. They know that this can really make a difference. And we are delighted to be able to support them,” said Stefan Dries, a managing director at FedEx Express in Germany. FedEx Express also supports the German conservation association Naturschutzbund Deutschland e.V. (NABU), the German medical aid organization action medeor, and SOS Kinderdorf e.V.

Plant for the Planet was founded in 2007 by the then nine-year-old Felix Finkbeiner. Today, almost 100,000 students around the world support the initiative. Their goal is to plant one trillion trees worldwide.
